Stress testing research

The biggest loss in agricultural output is caused by various environmental factors including abiotic stress in particular. Among the abiotic stress factors, draught, salt and temperature extremes have the most detrimental effects. Testing the plants’ stress level and tolerance is the conerstone of the utilization of plants of the Carpatian basin’s genetical values. The finest and most draught, freezing and salt resistant plants are the ones that could be successfully cultivated beyond our borders. Thus, the aim of our researchers is to study the marketability of herbs and woody plants by sensory observation methods such as retaining water from plants or exposing them to high temperature. Researchers measure the surface of leaves, chlorophyll density, photosynthesis, carbon-dioxide fixation, transpiration etc. This research allows for the distinction of plant species and genotypes and the selection and propagation of the most marketable species.
